Trichloromethane, chemical formula CHCl3, is an organic compound, also known as chloroform, colorless transparent liquid, has a special odor, sweet taste, high refractive index, non-combustible, density greater than water, volatile. It is the product of three hydrogen atoms in the methane molecule being replaced by chlorine atoms. Sensitive to light, it will react with oxygen in the air when exposed to light, and gradually decompose to produce highly toxic phosgene (carbonyl chloride) and hydrogen chloride. When stored, 1% ~ 2% ethanol can be added as a stabilizer. It can be miscible with ethanol, benzene, ether, petroleum ether, carbon tetrachloride, carbon disulfide and oil, etc. Because of its unique physical and chemical properties, the compound is widely used in different fields such as industry and medicine.

In industry, trichloromethane is widely used as a solvent, and its excellent solubility and volatility make it ideal for many chemical reactions and production processes. It plays a key role in the manufacture of coatings, glues, cleaners and other products, helping to synthesize and stabilize the quality and performance of these products. It is also an organic synthetic raw material in industry, mainly used to produce freon (F-21, F-22, F-23), dyes and drugs. A small amount of ethanol is often added to industrial products so that the resulting phosgene reacts with ethanol to form non-toxic diethyl carbonate. Before using industrial products, a small amount of concentrated sulfuric acid can be added after shaking and washing, and dried by calcium chloride or potassium carbonate to obtain chloroform without ethanol.
