Methanol, also known as hydroxyl methane, wood alcohol or wood spirits, is an organic compound, is the simplest structure of saturated monol, its chemical formula CH3OH/CH4O. The molecular weight is 32.04 and the boiling point is 64.7ºC. Methanol has the names "wood alcohol" and "wood essence" because it was once mainly produced by extracting wood vinegar (one of the products of wood distillation or cracking). Modern methanol is manufactured directly from carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen in a catalytic industrial process. Methanol is very light, volatile, colorless, flammable, and has a very similar odor to ethanol (drinking alcohol). But unlike ethanol, methanol is highly toxic and should not be drunk. It is commonly used as a solvent, antifreeze, fuel or ethanol denaturant, and can also be used to produce biodiesel through transesterification.

1. One of the basic organic raw materials, used for the manufacture of methyl chloride, methylamine and dimethyl sulfate and other organic products. It is also a raw material for pesticides (insecticides, acaricides), medicine (sulfonamides, comycin, etc.), and one of the raw materials for the synthesis of dimethyl terephthalate, methyl methacrylate and methyl acrylate.
2. The main application area of methanol is the production of formaldehyde, formaldehyde can be used to produce adhesives, mainly used in the wood processing industry, followed by the treatment agent used as molding plastics, coatings, textiles and paper.
