1. Key raw materials for the production of styrene
The most important use of ethylbenzene in chemical production is as a raw material for the production of styrene. Under the action of high temperature and catalyst, ethylbenzene dehydrogenates to produce styrene and hydrogen. For example, in the presence of a catalyst based on iron oxide, when the temperature reaches 600-650 ºC, the conversion rate of ethylbenzene is high, and the selectivity of styrene can also reach an ideal level.
Styrene is a monomer used in the manufacture of polystyrene (PS), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene plastic (ABS), styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) and many other important synthetic resins. Polystyrene has good transparency, hardness and insulation, widely used in packaging materials, electronic and electrical enclosures and other fields; ABS plastic has excellent comprehensive performance, toughness, hardness and luster, and is used in the manufacture of automotive parts, home appliance shells and other products.
2. As a solvent
Ethylbenzene is an excellent organic solvent. It has good solubility for many organic compounds, such as in the paint and ink industry, it can dissolve resins, pigments and other components.
